CONGRATULATIONS TO
Franchise Ballers 14U at the 2008 Nationals in Orlando, FL
Saturday, August 2nd vs. Deltona Heat:
Franchise lead at halftime by 6 points and then went on to win the
fist game of the tournament in pool play against Deltona Heat from
Deltona, Florida 63 to 60. Not much was known about this team so we
didn’t know what to expect as far as their competitive level of play
however it didn’t take us long to find out that they were a pretty good
team. Christian White from East Irondequoit led the way with 20 pts.
Jerame’ Owens from Spencerport had 13 pts. and lead with 8 rebounds, 2
blocks and 7 steals. Nick Doktor from West Irondequoit lead the team
with 5 assists. Phillip Valenti from Victor connected on 6 very big key
points late in the 4 qtr. to secure the game for the win.
Sunday, August 3rd vs. Brooklyn Ballers:
The second game was scheduled to be against the Brooklyn Ballers
from New York but after Brooklyn didn’t show up to play at game time a
forfeit was granted, giving Franchise the win. Franchise had looked
forward to this match up as Brooklyn appeared to be a very good team.
Monday, August 4th vs. Franklin County Wolfpack:
Franchise dominated the first half of this game going up on the
Wolfpack from Virginia by 29 points at halftime. The Wolfpack went on a
run in the second half to close the gap however a time out was taken by
Franchise to regroup and switch defenses to slow the Wolfpack down.
Franchise went on to win the game 78 to 54. Jonah Brooks from Victor
lead the team with 20 points. Christian White contributed 17 pts. and 3
steals. Nick Doktor also had 3 steals and led the team with 3 assists.
Roderick Jones from Rochester led the team with 13 rebounds and he
contributed 9 pts. Xavier Major Jr. from Rochester contributed 2 pts., 2
steals, 1 block and 2 assists. Phillip Valenti finished the game with 9
points to secure the win. This win gave Franchise a tourney record of 3
& 0 and earned the team a first round bi moving into the Championship
Bracket.
Tuesday, August, 5th vs. LA Roundballers:
Franchise was quickly surprised and caught off guard in the first
few minutes of this game by the Roundballers aggressive play. The
Roundballers from Louisiana won their pool as well and played in the
first round of the Championship Bracket defeating a team from
Massachusetts and advancing on to the second round to face Franchise.
Nothing went right for Franchise this game. We didn’t shoot or defend
well this game. There were plenty of opportunities to score in this game
however nothing would fall for us. Some of the parents joked saying "It
seamed as if there was an invisible person hanging around the rim not
allowing Franchise shots to fall through.” A total of 6 technical fouls
were called against Franchise in this game. Franchise ended up in foul
trouble in the second half allowing the Roundballers to make 13 out of
18 free throws. Franchise would get their first loss of the tourney with
a final score of 29 to 48. Jonah Brooks and Jerame’ Owens lead with 6
points each for Franchise. Jerame’ also lead with 7 rebounds and 2
blocks. Nick Doktor lead with 3 steals. Christian White lead with 3
assists and contributed 5 pts. Josh Hagins from the Roundballers scored
a game high of 14 points scoring all but 2 of his points in the second
half with 7 of his 13 second half points being free throws. The
Roundballers went on to win in the next round defeating a team from
Alabama and them moving on to play against a team called The Truth from
Kentucky. The Roundballers were defeated by The Truth and The Truth
advanced to the final four and then eventually went on to win the
tournament.
Wednesday, August 6th vs. Florida Future 2012:
The loss to the Roundballers eliminated Franchise’s chance of coming
in 1st place in the tourney however there was still a lot to play for.
Franchise would still have a chance to finish in the top 7 teams now
that we were sent to play in the 2nd Round Consolation bracket.
Franchise played very well this game and went on to win 43 to 36. Nick
Doktor and Christian White lead with 7 points each. Christian White also
led with 3 assists. Jerame’ Owens led with 8 rebounds. Jahmahl Pardner
from Rochester lead with 4 steals and contributed 6 points. Roderick
Jones Jr. led with 2 blocks. Christian Harris from Henrietta did a great
job keeping pressure on the ball making the Florida Future team turn the
ball over and allowing his teammates opportunities to steal the ball.
Franchise had a total of 16 steals this game. This was a great team win
with everyone chipping in!
Thursday, August 7th vs. LA Hawks:
This would be a very important game as the winner would move on and
the looser would go home. Mitch Ford from Victor tried to get the team
pumped up by grabbing some big rebounds in the first moments of the game
and scoring the first 4 points for Franchise but we could tell right
from the start that we were going to have our hands full with the Hawks
from Maryland. Franchise took two early time outs to try and settle
things down and strategize against the Hawks. This was a game in which
very few calls went our way so it added to the frustration of the
players, coaches and the Franchise fans. The fans (which consisted of
parents, grandparents, siblings, cousins, aunts & uncles) as well as the
coaches tried everything to motivate the team to play harder and just
when it seamed as if they were going to make a run to even the score we
would get another harsh call against us. The Hawks lead at halftime by
19. Much of halftime was spent trying to motivate the team, telling them
that it wasn’t too late to get back in the game. Assistant Coach Dan
White from East Irondequoit and I discussed what we could do to slow
down the Hawks and get back into the game. In the second half Franchise
was able to pressure the ball with a full court 1-3-1 defense and then
switching to a full court 3-1-1 defense. As a result to the change in
defense, Franchise was able to go on to a 32 to 14 point run to close
the gap making it a 1 point game by the end of the 3rd quarter. In the
4th quarter it was pretty much an even matchup until late in the 4th
where it came down to free throws as the Hawks were in the 1 & 1 bonus.
Franchise lost the game 69 to 75. This loss would eliminate Franchise
from advancing any further in this tournament. Christian White led the
team with 20 pts., Jahmahl Pardner had 15 pts., Nick Doktor had 9 pts.,
Mitch Ford had 7 pts., Lorenzo Morrison from Rochester had 6 pts.,
Phillip Valenti and Roderick Jones had 4 pts. each, Jonah Brooks &
Christian Harris had 2 pts. each. No other stats were taken during this
game. Franchise finished the tournament with a tourney record of 4 wins
& 2 losses. The team fell into the top 20 out of 111 teams which is
still very good considering they were competing at the national level.
This is the 3rd year in a row that this Franchise team has participated
in the AAU Nationals. Last year the team went to Memphis, TN and the
year before that they traveled to Lexington, KY. All 3 trips to
Nationals have been very successful and fun. Franchise even had an
opportunity to travel to Rennes, France in March of this year to play in
an international tournament where they won 1st place. Franchise’s record
for the entire season is 47 & 15.
A big thanks goes out to all of the parents, family members & friends
that help make this season a success. A special thanks goes out to Sandy
White (team mon), Demetrius Rhodes, Jacob Scott, Junior Kemp and all our
sponsors of Franchise.
Head Coach
Xavier Major Sr.
